The separate self non-entity could be pretending to be a Buddhist monk. It
could be pretending to be a Theosophist or any other kind of spiritual seeker,
and this being the case, the spiritual life is being corrupted and consumed by
the insatiable, greedy appetite of the spiritual seeker. Every disavowal of
wholeness, every disobedience of the truth of We-awareness that wells up
spontaneously from within the One, comes from the loss of resolute, silent
awareness which allows the separate self non-entity to become operative with
its divisive agenda. Through that disobedience, through that refusal to
surrender the separate self non-entity to the reality of what truly is, from
that perverse and lazy refusal, comes every conceivable kind of unhappiness,
upset, violence, ambition, craziness, addiction and the peril into which all
humanity is now falling.
An older tradition would have said, “Obey the god within”, with the same
understanding, this before spiritual life was fragmented and
anthropomorphized, this before spiritual life degenerated into Will-to-Power
and was limited to the narrow confines of the separate self non-entity.
In the obeying, the obeying of what abides and what opens, it is discovered
that the spiritual path itself is this very undistorted openness to all the
world. In this awareness, a remarkable thing occurs: the openness to the world
in any direction is contained as a consciousness gesture within the awakened
field of awareness. Awakened awareness can receive all that approaches from
the world but is never divided. There is no loss of whole awareness. And there
is no willful attempt to retain or hold on to it. You may be in any situation
or event that life presents, moving within the world and its conditions, yet
simultaneously you are aware-awake and whole.
In other words, you are liberated, you are free of that concern-filled
agitation and nervousness, that feeling of being lost in the sub-awareness of
distraction and having to somehow retrieve yourself. This wholeness, in fact,
is your natural spiritual nature. We are not talking about any improved state
that has to be developed and accomplished in the future in order to become
spiritually aware. We are talking about self-realization, realizing who you
already are. If you were not already and always capable of realizing authentic
Selfhood, then you would never be capable of it.
Now, we have been born into a world that is deeply divided on all sides. We
have been born into a culture of conflict and alienation. We have been brought
up within linguistic structures, social structures, economic structures and
many other conditions that have caused us to fall into the hypnotism of taking
the separate subjective self non-entity as the real Self. But we are all much
healthier than that, and it’s our innate health, our innate wellness, our
innate wholeness that calls upon us all to question and contemplate the real
and the unreal within ourselves and each other and the world.
There can be no true Self-awareness that is not We-awareness within the One.
It is an unenlightened talker who says that the “spiritual life” is a “private
affair”. How could the Mystery of the One and the Many be private? Even though
we will never be able to speak the One in words, it is spoken in our presence,
it is the Voice of the Silence. True civilization is grounded in the
celebration of the Mystery of One and Many.
The Mystery of the One and the Many may seem intractable to us for all time.
Yet we would not be the first by far to create a culture in honour and wise
celebration of how we are truly here on earth with each other, One and Many,
given to our Silent Individual Selves in freedom by the “Mystery of
Mysteries”.
First civilizations in innumerable times and places, have been born in the One
and shaped with the hearts and hands of the Many, have blossomed in their
eternal fullness and, at the end of their allotted cycle, returned to the One as
a spiritually mature and harmonized Many. At the end of their life cycle given
over more to contemplation more than action,
passing into the living Akashic memory of the Sacred Earth, enduring
throughout all Space and Time within Awakened Man. And we Spiritual Realists recall.
