Crosses in the Zodiac

There are three crosses in the Zodiac:

The Cardinal Cross: consisting of the constellations of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn.

The Mutable Cross: consisting of Pisces, Gemini, Virgo and Sagittarius.

The Fixed or Central Cross: consisting Aquarius, Taurus, Leo and Scorpio. The Fixed or Central Cross is the key to the understanding of the compositional balance of the constellational beings and forces:

Aquarius: is the archetypal and universally human being - the spiritual man.

Scorpio: is the soaring mind, the intelligence.

Leo: is the heart-rhythmic, surging life of feeling - as in the lion-hearted Christian one.

Taurus: the Earthbound physically of incarnate man.

For long ages this cross was symbolized as a creature with the head of a man (Aquarius), the front paws and chest of a lion (Leo), the wings of a bird (Scorpio) and the hindquarters of a bull (Taurus). This cross is also the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John.

In the Book of Kells, the famous Keltic manuscript illuminated by the monks of Ireland, the Fixed Cross is woven into the artwork again and again, revealing a constant concern with this theme of the four-fold nature of Cosmic Man. The Fixed Cross appears in esoteric art throughout the ages as either a gate or a mythic creature that stands guard at a gate. The gate is the opening to the spiritual world of the Cosmos and the creature is the nature of Man himself.

Before going into the nature of Man in this light, it is necessary to recapitulate in brief the history of how the vernal point has precessed through the crosses during the post-Atlantean epochs up to date.
